In atopic dermatitis, an allergic reaction occurs when a pet is exposed to allergens in their environment such as pollen, mold, or house dust. Less commonly, Some dogs or cats can be allergic to their food or treats. The allergic reaction causes the animal to itch, rub, lick, or bite at themselves. The itching may be localized to certain areas or may be over their entire body. Allergies also predispose pets to developing secondary skin, eye and ear infections.
